Please understand, this is A God Story and A United Methodist Men story. I was pleased to simply be along for the ride!
The Billboard project came about through a prompting from God!
During a normal truck drivers day I looked up and saw a sky-full of
“endhunger.org”. After a double take I realized that it was indeed the Society of St. Andrew that we support as United Methodist Men. I actually said to myself, “Ok God, I’ll call Marion about the potatoes”. I had been meaning to call her about the availability of potatoes for our district annual meeting. I called her and we talked about the potatoes and the billboard. She explained to me that a supporter had donated the advertising and how exciting it was. Well, here’s the rest of the story.
This billboard had caught my attention! Someone, I don’t know who, had expressed their support by acquiring and donating the advertising space.
The thought kept running through my mind, the United Methodist Men supports this ministry also. We support the Upper Room Prayer ministry as well. God would not leave me alone! Why can’t the UMM so something like that? Why can’t the Rock Hill District do something like that? We need to put up a billboard. If one person, even a non-believer who was concerned about those starving, or someone that was depressed or just needed someone to pray with them, if they saw the billboard and acted on there feelings, what then…..
In our district we are in a building stage. The leadership team had been struggling to find a common cause that would bring us together. This project was the challenge we needed to get our men focused. We raised the hundreds of dollars required in only a couple of months.
Our contract for the billboard on I-77 expires pretty soon. The new leadership team is meeting in a couple of weeks to determine whether or not we can afford to purchase more time. The vinyl is our to keep and the advertising company “Lamar Outdoor Advertising” will store it for us and will put it up in another location a little later or some other district may even want to use it. God gave us the where with all to get it and we want it to continue to serve us “God” however it needs to happen.
It was a great adventure and we must continue to use this and every avenue we have available to us to encourage the world to be mindful of those less fortunate than we are, and to PRAY!
