The Rev. Dr. G. Ross Freeman
|
G. Ross Freeman is a retired member of the South
Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church
since June 1993.
Dr. Freeman grew up in a small middle Georgia
town and was under appointment by a Bishop from
the South Georgia Conference for 52 years as a
city missionary, pastor, academic administrator,
district superintendent, denominational executive,
and editor before he retired in 1993.
More than 20 years of his life have been spent
thinking primarily about providing and educating
professional ministers for the church. As the
same ime he has been a consistent advocate for
the ministry of the laity and a champion of United
Methodist Men in publishing programs, planning,
speaking, leading retreats and writing legislation
for the Book of Discipline.
For eight years, Dr. Freeman was the only ordained
clergy from the Southeastern Jurisdiction serving
on the General Board of the Laity. During this
time he was a member of the executive committee,
1964-1972. He was chairman and/or facilitator
of the Program Design Committee for the International
Congress of United Methodist Men at Purdue 1965,
1969, 1973, 1977, 1981, 1985 and 1993. He chaired
a task force to write A Theological Statement
about the Laity which was accepted by the General
Council on Ministries and served on The Futuring
Committee, a task force to study the re-location
of the General Board of Global Ministries, an
Interagency Task Force to write a definition and
program for the denomination-wide Priority of
Evangelism, and a joint task force to Create a
United Methodist Presence on Television.
For ten years he was president of the Institute
of Church Renewal, the parent of the Lay Witness
Movement.
He designed and wrote three programs or United
Methodist Men as guided experiences in A
Spiritual Journey for Men, A
Transforming Journey for Men, and A
Ministry Journey for Men.
At the turn of the century, the United Methodist
Men of the Southeastern Jurisdiction asked Dr.
Freeman to write his autobiography. A brief except
from A Journey Beyond can be found by clicking
here in this website and instructions for ordering
the book.
All proceeds from the sale of the book go to
the Foundation to fund projects of the Southeastern
Jurisdiction UMM Leadership Awards program.
