9-11: Remembering those who were slain
by honoring those still serving”

The Western North Carolina  Conference of United Methodist Men partnered with Collaborative Ventures, a Charlotte business resource group, to sponsor a 9-11 remembrance event: “9-11: Remembering those who were slain by honoring those still serving”.

 

The event was held at University City United Methodist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina.

 

In remembering the sacrifices of public safety personnel on that fateful day. over  50 police officers. firemen and first responders were honored with a special meal and  800  copies of the historic devotional, “Strength for Service to God and Country”.  These devotional booklets were given to them for distribution  throughout their various departments.  

 

Over 1 million of these devotioanls were distributed to troops during WWII. They are still being given to troops and public safety workers today. Learn more at www.strengthforservice.org

 

Special plaques were presented to Police Chief Rodney Monroe and Fire Chief John D. Intergenerational entertainment from singing, poetry and readings from the devotional book flowed throughout the program.

Her son Rick,a police officer, was killed in the line of duty 18 years ago.  Throughout her message Norkett shared her pain for the  loss of her son, but also her love and commitment to his fellow police officers.

 

Hank Dozier, the WNCC conference president stated: “This event was a success not by the number of attendees alone, but by the commitment of the business community to join us in recognizing what the event meant to the spirit and heart of those who serve.”

 

Hank also stated that the UMMen of the WNCC hope to continue such collaboratons with the business community on future projects, including mission opportunities.
